Results Dutch Schools Debating Championships 2012
The Dutch Schools Debating Championships 2012, held on the 24th of March, was a great succes. Schools from all over the country competed, having debates on a number of important issues. The two teams that made the finals were USG A and USG B. Joris Broeders from USG A took the Best speaker prize and USG A won the final. Eleven students were selected for the national team.

Dutch Team leaves for Capetown
As the WSDC 2012 approaches rapidly, the Dutch team prepares at Schiphol for their long flight to Capetown, South Africa. Over the past weeks, the team has gone through some more solid preparation in the form of a few ‘Bootcamps’ given by Rooj Darweesh, who replaced Thom Wetzer as the latter went to study at Berkeley. Meanwhile Menno Schellekens, the Dutch adjudicator, has focussed more and more on the preparation of his own role, which constitutes an art in and of itself.

Welcome to the Dutch Schools Debating Championships (DSDC) Foundation: This is what we do
The DSDC Foundation is responsible for the recruitment, coaching and delegation of the official Dutch debating team to the World Schools Debating Championships. Over the past few years, we have done so with very successfully: in 2010, we broke as the 11th team and in 2011 even as the 3rd best team. In 2012, we will send our delegation to Cape Town, South Africa for the WSDC 2012.
1. Recruitment. Recruitment takes place at our annual tournament – the Dutch Schools Debating Championships - for which all high school students in the Netherlands are eligible. The tournament is held in English and boasts an impressive pool of expert judges. Here, we select the best debaters. Out of these debaters, through an elaborate selection procedure, the final team will be chosen.

2. Coaching. Once the team has been selected, it must be thoroughly prepared for the tournament. Weekly trainings given by accomplished debaters and experts in various fields provide the necessary skills and background knowledge. The team’s strategy will also be decided upon. This year, Thom Wetzer, Menno Schellekens and Jeroen Heun coached the team. Since Thom Wetzer will be studying in Berkeley from January onwards, the team will once again rely on the experience from Rooj Darweesh for the final sessions and coaching at the tournament.
3. Delegation of the Team. The foundation is responsible for the Dutch delegation to the World Championships. Over the last years, we have sent teams to Washington, Athens, Doha and Dundee. Every year, this delegation is guided by members of the Foundation (at least consisting from the coaching team and a judge), and in 2011 we were even honored by the presence of Ard van der Steur, a Member of Parliament in the Netherlands. In 2012, Rooj Darweesh and Menno Schellekens will join the team to Doha. They will share their experiences on this website and on SevenTwenty, the website of the Dutch Debating Organization (‘Nederlandse Debatbond’).

Rooj back in as Coach for WSDC Cape Town 2012
Thom Wetzer, the head of our Coaching Team, will not coach Team Netherlands at the World Schools Debating Championships 2012, as he will be studying at UC Berkeley from January onwards. Rooj Darweesh will replace him. Rooj was acting Coach for Team Netherlands at WSDC 2010 and WSDC 2011 in Qatar and in Scotland and is currently the Foundation’s Chairman.
Thom will stay on as the Head of the Coaching Team until Rooj takes over in January 2012, a capacity in which he is assisted by vice-coaches Jeroen Heun and Menno Schellekens. Menno will also be going to the WSDC as a judge on behalf of the Dutch Delegation. The Foundation wishes Thom all the best in California!

Every year the DSDC Foundation hosts the ‘Dutch Schools Debating Championship’ to select the best Dutch debaters for Dutch national team. However, this year the timespan between the World Schools Debating Championships 2011 and 2012 is too short, so we had to find a new way to select the Dutch Team. We still want to give every high-school student the chance to get into the national team, so we are organizing Trials. All high-school students in the Netherlands can register for the trials until 23 September.
Trials
Since we cannot accommodate too large a group, we select 12 students from all applicants. These twelve debaters will come together with our coaches on Saturday, October 1 at University College Utrecht. During the day they will participate in three debates. Two of these will be about unprepared motions and one will be about a motion that the students will receive a week in advance.
Seven students will be selected based on their performance in the debates. The final four debaters will be selected at the end of October and represent The Netherlands at the WSDC 2010.
How can I sign up?
Every high-school student in the Netherlands who is younger than 19 years old is eligible to participate. Signing up is easy:
Step 1: Send an email before 23 September to dutchschools@gmail.com containing the following:
- Personal information
- Name
- Address
- Email address
- Telephone number
- Current school and year (for example: Utrechts Stedelijk Gymnasium, year 5)
- Date of birth
2. A summary of your previous experiences with debating. (Note: this will not be decisive. We welcome everyone, no matter the experience they have. In previous years quite a few students have been selected without any experience.)
3. A short letter of motivation.
When we have received your email, we will send you a case with a current issue in the news. We will ask you to give your opinion on the topic and support it with argumentation in 250 words or less. This case has to be sent back to us by September 23.
Step 2. We can only admit a small number of people in the first selection round and if more people register than we can accommodate, we will have to turn some applicants down. Every one who applies will get a message on September 26 with the news if they have been selected or not. Those who have been selected will also be informed about the prepared motion and receive detailed practical information about the gathering on October 1.
Step 3. On October 1 University College Utrecht will host the Trials. First, the selected students will receive a short introduction to the WSDC format. Afterwards they will participate in three debates, adjudicated by the best debaters the Netherlands has to offer. We will contact everybody the day afterwards to inform them if they have been selected.
From October 1 onwards we expect everyone who has been selected to train with us approximately once a week – mostly during the weekends. Often there will be experts present during the training to give lectures and help the team with tough motions. We ask debaters to prepare a motion during the weekdays.

WIL JIJ NAAR HET WK IN ZUID-AFRIKA? SCHRIJF JE NU IN VOOR DE TRIALS!
In september schreven de Nederlandse Scholierendebaters geschiedenis door op het WSDC 2011 Singapore, de latere wereldkampioen, te verslaan en te eindigen als 10de team van de wereld. Nu kijken we vooruit, naar het WSDC 2012, dat in januari zal worden gehouden in Zuid-Afrika. Op 1 oktober organiseert de Stichting DSDC haar ‘Trials’, waar scholieren uit heel Nederland de kans krijgen om onderdeel te worden van dit unieke team.
De Trials
Normaal gesproken organiseert de Stichting DSDC ieder jaar de ‘Dutch Schools Debating Championships’, een debattoernooi waarop de beste debaters van Nederland worden geselecteerd voor het Nederlandse team. Zoals we eerder al hebben aangekondigd, is het niet mogelijk om in de korte tijdspanne tussen de twee WK’s een nieuw toernooi te organiseren. Toch willen we iedere scholier de kans geven om in het team te komen, en daarom hebben we – net als in veel andere landen – deze Trials opgezet. Scholieren kunnen zich hiervoor inschrijven tot 23 september.
Uit alle inschrijvingen zullen 12 scholieren worden gekozen. Op zaterdag 1 oktober zullen zij, onder begeleiding van onze coaches, bij elkaar komen op het University College in Utrecht. Daar zullen ze gedurende de dag 3 debatten voeren. Twee van deze debatten zullen gaan over een impromptu stelling (een onvoorbereide stelling) en één debat zal gaan over een stelling die de scholieren een week van tevoren ontvangen. Op basis van de observaties van de coaches zullen van deze 12 debaters slechts 7 worden geselecteerd. Na enkele weken zullen hier 4 debaters uit worden gekozen, en die zullen Nederland vertegenwoordigen op het WK.
Hoe kan ik me inschrijven?
Iedere scholier in Nederland die jonger is dan 19 jaar kan zich inschrijven. Je kunt dit niet per school of per team doen; iedere scholier moet zich individueel inschrijven. Het proces is heel eenvoudig:
Stap 1: Stuur vóór 23 september een e-mail naar dutchschools@gmail.com waarin je het volgende vermeldt:
a.) Persoonsgegevens
- Naam
- Adresgegevens
- Telefoonnummer
- Je Huidige School + Schooljaar (bijv. Stedelijk Gymnasium Nijmegen, klas 5)
- Je geboortedatum
b.) Vertel iets over je ervaring met het debat
(Let wel: Ook als je geen debatervaring hebt, kun je gewoon worden toegelaten. Dit is de afgelopen jaren meermalen succesvol gebeurd.)
c.) Vertel (kort) waarom je graag in het team wilt.
Als wij je e-mail hebben ontvangen, sturen we een casus naar je op. Hierin vragen we je om (kort) je mening te geven over een actueel onderwerp. Ook deze casus moeten wij voor 23 september hebben ontvangen.
Stap 2: Wij kunnen maar een beperkt aantal mensen toelaten tot de Trials, en mochten zich meer mensen aanmelden zullen we een selectie moeten maken. Iedereen die zich heeft ingeschreven krijgt op 26 september een bericht waarin we vertellen dat ze wel, of juist niet, zijn toegelaten. Iedereen die is toegelaten krijgt op 26 september ook de stelling te horen die ze moeten voorbereiden, en we zullen dan ook uitweiden over de praktische details (plaats, tijd, routebeschrijving etcetera) van de Trials. Tot slot: om de onkosten van de Trials te kunnen dekken, vragen wij iedereen die geselecteerd is een bijdrage van 5 euro over te maken.
Stap 3: De Trials. Op zaterdag 1 oktober nodigen wij de 12 geselecteerde scholieren uit om de hele dag naar University College in Utrecht te komen voor de Trials. Onder begeleiding van de meest ervaren debaters van Nederland zullen zij eerst een korte training ontvangen over het WSDC debatformat, en daarna de kans krijgen om zich te bewijzen in drie Engelstalige debatten. Op 2 oktober zullen we met iedereen contact opnemen om te vertellen wie door is, en wie niet.
Het team dat uiteindelijk wordt gekozen zal vanaf de Trails tot aan het WSDC vrijwel iedere week een dag bij elkaar komen om te trainen onder begeleiding van experts uit allerlei vakgebieden. Deze dagen vallen bijna altijd in het weekend. Door de week vragen we de debaters om een stelling voor te bereiden.

Natuurlijk is het hard werken, maar dat loont zich dan ook wel! Wij moedigen je aan om je in te schrijven voor deze Trials, te laten zien wat je kunt en deze prachtige kans te pakken. Wie weet reis jij in januari wel naar Zuid-Afrika om – te midden van honderden scholieren uit alle uithoeken van de wereld – de eer van je land te verdedigen…

Rooj Darweesh steps down as coach, Thom Wetzer succeeds
September 1, 2011 – As of Septmber 1st, Rooj Darweesh will step down as Head Coach for the Dutch National Debating Team. Thom Wetzer, last year’s Vice-Coach, will take over and lead the National Team at the World Schools Debating Championships 2012, in Cape Town (South Africa). Rooj will stay on as Chairman of the DSDC Foundation. Moreover, he will remain the main contact for the foundation.
Rooj: “The reason I am stepping down is that I will be too occupied with other obligations, mainly study-related. It has been a great pleasure and a privilege to work with all of the talented debaters of the two teams I have coached. Thom will do an excellent job as my replacement, as he is already very experienced at debating, judging and coaching.”
Thom: “When I was on the team as a debater in 2011, Rooj showed great skill in preparing our team. And last year, as a vice-coach, I learned to appreciate the extraordinary efforts he has displayed even more. The results are clear: he has done an outstanding job.” Since Rooj took on the job in 2009, the Dutch team set multiple new records. The team finished second at the European Open Debating Tournament 2009. At the WSDC 2010 in Doha (Qatar), the Netherlands finished as the best English-as-a-Foreign -Language-Team for the first time. At the WSDC 2011 in Dundee (Schotland), the team held on to that title for the second consecutive year. Furthermore, they went into the knock-out rounds undefeated, after beating Singapore, the team that ended up winning the tournament.
Topprestatie: Nederland beste Non-Native Team op WSDC 2011!
Na een fantastisch finaledebat en een prachtige ceremonie in Caird Hall, Dundee, kunnen we nu met zekerheid zeggen dat het Nederlandse team voor het vierde jaar op rij een nieuw record heeft gevestigd: we zijn geëindigd als 10de team, beste EFL-team (zelfs beste non-native team!) en ook op de individuele ranking behoren we tot de wereldtop. Zo is Menno Schellekens de derde non-native speaker van de wereld, en ook Joris (4e EFL), Azer (5e EFL) en Anna hebben indrukwekkende prestaties neergezet. Het feit dat Singapore, een team dat in de voorronde is verslagen door Nederland, uiteindelijk wereldkampioen is geworden bevestigt slechts de kracht van dit Nederlandse team.
Wij zijn – als coaches en jurylid – ongelooflijk trots op deze prestatie en danken het team voor hun inzet, passie en enthousiasme. Bij dezen willen we ook nogmaals iedereen die heeft geholpen bij het runnen van de stichting, het organiseren van het DSDC-toernooi en het coachen van het team van harte bedanken: zonder jullie hulp hadden we dit nooit kunnen doen.

Dag 8 – Het klapstuk
Na een spannend toernooi is voor Nederland vandaag – met een klapstuk – een einde gekomen aan een geweldig WSDC. Hong Kong versloeg ons met 3-2 in een ongelooflijk spannend debat, en dat was even zuur. Nu, na een leuke dag (en heerlijk eten) met Ard, ziet het team (Azer, Anna, Joris en Menno) gelukkig vooral wat we wél hebben bereikt: de beste Nederlandse prestatie ooit, en een ranking tussen de beste native speakers. (En wie weet wat er op persoonlijke sprekerspunten nog komt…) Mede namens Eva, Rooj en het team wil ik iedereen bedanken voor de unieke manier waarop jullie ons allen hebben gevolgd en geholpen. En we hopen dat jullie dat blijven doen, want er zal zeker meer volgen…
